At Heidelberg University, the teaching and research of European languages build on a long tradition that goes back to the nineteenth century. Under the umbrella of the University’s Faculty of Modern Languages, seven institutes exist for the comparative study of the great European language families, from both a historical and contemporary perspective, as well as from a qualitative micro perspective and from a quantitative, computer-based perspective.
With approximately thirty professors and just as many adjunct professors and “Privatdozenten”, more than 100 junior researchers and lecturers, and more than 5000 students, the Faculty of Modern Languages at Heidelberg University is one of the largest faculties in the state of Baden-Württemberg. It collaborates with numerous domestic and international partner research institutions.
